Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in an interview with Voice of America on 27 September that there is no justification for US visa restrictions on Bangladeshi individuals.

VOA Bangla chief Shatarupa Barua interviewed the Prime Minister during his visit to Washington. VOA Bangla published the interview on its website.

The US on September 22 announced visa restrictions on individuals responsible for undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh.

The US announced a new visa policy for Bangladesh on May 24. Earlier in December 2021, the US had imposed sanctions on seven officers of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Responding to a question on the US visa policy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “That’s my question why are they suddenly trying to impose visa restrictions?”

“If they talk about human rights and voting rights, it is we, the Awami League, who fought for the voting rights of the people of Bangladesh. Many of our people shed their blood to ensure voting rights. We have undertaken all kinds of reforms – voter lists with photographs, transparent ballot boxes, making people aware of their voting rights – so that the elections are free, fair and neutral, the Prime Minister said.
