ICDDR,B officials say that international rules and regulations are followed for research on animals. And the emphasis is on ethics. Animals are used in research all over the world. Along with this, great importance is given to the ethical issues related to the use of animals. The dignity of the animal is mentioned.
The guidelines stated that, every animal has some inherent value or importance, which should be respected. During research it has to be kept in mind that animals have the ability to feel pain. It is also important to protect the interests of animals through research.
icddr,b has written policy guidelines for the use of animals in research. It states that the rationale behind using animals in research should be clearly explained and animals should be kept under the supervision of professionally qualified persons. Furthermore, animals have to be handled or controlled through documented or standard procedures.
The guidelines also state that the research process has to be carried out in a manner that causes the least amount of suffering to the animals. Wherever necessary, use of local or general anesthetics depending on the animal species should be ensured. Whenever an animal is particularly ill, the animal should be compassionately euthanized. Always try to keep the number of animals in the experiment to a minimum.
Officials at the facility have said there is no scope for reusing the animals. In other words, there is no custom of using the same animal for different experiments. At the end of the experiment, the used animals are given a drug to induce sleep. They no longer wake up from sleep. An NGO named Prism Bangladesh takes the dead bodies of those animals later.
