Wednesday’s strike, which also involved workers affiliated with two other trade unions, lasted 12 hours, Unison said in a statement, adding that next month two Unison strikes will last 24 hours.
The walkout will involve all ambulance workers as opposed to just emergency response workers, although many will be exempt from strike action under emergency cover schemes, said the union, which represents most ambulance workers in Britain.
“The only way to end this dispute is through dialogue,” said Christina McEnany, the general secretary of Unison. No health worker wants to go on strike again in the new year.
The strike comes as an already strained health system faces further strain this winter, with nurses also going on strike in a separate pay dispute.
The British Ministry of Health did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
