Thousands of people took to the streets of Peru’s capital Lima on Thursday in a peaceful protest against the new government and president, leaving at least 42 dead in weeks of bloody clashes that ousted former President Pedro Castillo.

Protester Olga Espazo said, “Why are you turning your back on people, for God’s sake there are so many deaths, stop this carnage.”

“Ms. Boluaart, they’re using you,” she said.

Protesters shouted “Dina Asina!” (Dina is a murderer) Cardboard coffins, pictures of victims and anti-government slogans line the streets of Lima in the capital’s first mass protest since the new year.
