Popular author of children’s literature among arrestees

A popular author of children’s literature, Tipu Kibria, and two others have been arrested in Dhaka for their alleged involvement in producing and supplying child pornography.

In separate drives, the Criminal Investigation Department arrested
Tipu, Nurul Amin Nuru and Saharul Islam from the capital’s Mugda and Khilgaon areas on Wednesday and early yesterday.

Tipu – whose real name is TIM Fakruzzaman – had been making porno films by paying street children as low as Tk300-Tk400, said Ashraful Islam, superintendent of police at the CID (organised crime). Addressing a media briefing at the CID headquarters yesterday, he said Tipu mostly hired underage boys for his productions and
sold the pornographic materials to foreign dealers and websites.

“Tipu directed porno films and supplied pornographic pictures to his foreign clients in Germany, Australia, Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom,” he added.

Based on information, a CID team raided the residence of Tipu – who mainly earns a living as a freelance cameraman – at Tarabagh area of Khilgaon and arrested him, said Ashraful.

Following leads provided by Tipu during primary interrogation, the CID later raided a studio in Mugda where the porno movies were allegedly filmed. From there, a child victim was rescued and Nurul was arrested while shooting a porno film. Saharul was also detained from the scene.

Law enforcers also seized a large number of pornographic pictures, computer hard disks, video cameras and 70 tubes of lubricating gel from the studio, the SP added.

Additional Deputy Inspector General of the CID (organised crime) Shah Alam said Tipu has written over 50 books, while Saharul looked after Tipu’s finances and used to collect the money sent by foreign clients.

Asked about the arrest, Mokhlesur Rahman, additional inspector general of the CID, said the operation was launched based on information provided by Interpol. The international organisation had been keeping an eye on the child pornography situation in the country since 2005, and was finally able to trace the identity of Tipu this year, he added.

The CID started investigating Tipu after receiving information from Interpol only a week ago, Mokhlesur said.

The CID is currently also investigating a separate case on child pornography, which was filed with Mugda police station in 2012.
