A large explosion was heard inside the station when it was first attacked, followed by a series of explosions.

The Pakistani Taliban or Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack in a message sent to journalists by their spokesman.

The station houses the offices of the city’s most senior police officers. Deputy Inspector General Irfan Baloch told Reuters there could have been up to 30 police at the station at the time of the attack.

The Islamist TTP, a breakaway from the Taliban that rules Afghanistan, has recently increased attacks on police in Pakistan’s northwest as part of its campaign against the government in Islamabad.
