A study published in the American Society for Microbiology journal Microbiology Spectrum found that tomato juice helps eliminate Salmonella typhi and other bacteria that can harm the health of the digestive and urinary tracts. Salmonella typhi is a deadly human organism that causes typhoid fever.

“Our main goal in this study was to find out whether tomatoes and tomato juice can kill intestinal microbes, including Salmonella typhi, and if so, what properties they have that make them so effective,” said Jeongmin Song, associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Cornell University and lead study investigator.
