Tougher laws to control baby food

August 1 to August 7 will be observed as world breast feeding week. On the eve of the week state minister for health and family welfare said, his government is working to enact a new law to replace 1984 ordinance in a bid to control the overwhelming infant food advertisement on print and electronic media.

The health and family welfare minister Ruhal Haque said, only breast feeding is enough for a baby till six month. Breast feeding should be continued till two years of age. Homemade food may be associated after six months. But breast milk substitute is discouraged. Baby food business is booming nowadays, especially its true for Asian region.

It is reported that the new law will bar the health professionals from attending milk company sponsored seminars.  “This baby food is not germ free and there is no alternative to breast milk”-this caution must be written on the middle portion of baby food container in clear and big letters.
