Commuters face long delays in Manik Mia Avenue, Farmgate and nearby areas

Traffic slowed to a crawl in parts of Dhaka this morning, with heavy congestion reported in Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Manik Mia Avenue, Farmgate and surrounding areas.
The traffic disruption severely affected office-goers, with many passengers getting off buses and walking to their destinations after vehicles remained stuck for long periods.

The congestion began building up from early morning as BNP leaders and activists from different parts of Dhaka and elsewhere arrived in processions to pay homage to party founder Ziaur Rahman and former chairperson Khaleda Zia, marking the BNP’s 48th founding anniversary.
Following the programme, leaders and activists of different BNP units and its associate organisations continued arriving at the venue in processions to pay their homage, worsening traffic congestion in the area.

Farzana Ahmed, a private-sector employee, told The Daily Star that she left Dhanmondi for Farmgate around 8:30am. “I usually reach the office within half an hour. But today, I reached at around 9:45am,” she said.
Many commuters took to social media to find out the reason behind the gridlock and sought suggestions on alternative routes.
