Tremor jolts some parts of Bangladesh

DN-earthquakeTremor jolted some areas of Bangladesh including Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet,, Khulna, Rajshahi, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Bandarban yesterday on around 10:45 pm. It was an earthquake of 5.5 on the Richter Scale. Its epicenter was about four hundred and thirty kilometers south east in Myanmar from earthquake observation center in Agargaon, Dhaka.

According to the United States Geological Survey the center of the earthquake was 126.6 kilometers below the epicenter in Mayanmar.

In many parts of Bangladesh panicked residents came out from their houses.  Some buildings of Chittagong have developed cracks. Students of Dhaka University came out from their dormitories. There are not reports of casualties yet.

According to geologists Bangladesh is situated in tectonic fault boundary area, this is why it is an earthquake prone area; buildings should be constructed following the building code. There is concern that many developers are not following the building code.
