A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only one in four Americans believe the war was worth its cost, and Trump’s approval rating is at its lowest since returning to office last year.
The exchange came a day after the Senate voted to direct Trump to end the war in a largely symbolic rebuke. Cassidy was one of four Republicans to support the resolution along with opposing Democrats.
Trump did not mention the exchange with Cassidy, who was ousted by a Trump-backed challenger in the primary election earlier this year. Later, he criticized the Senate vote.
“Iran looks at it, they say ‘what’s this all about’. Now you know, it’s meaningless, right?” Trump said this to reporters at the White House.
Several hours later, the administration asked Congress for $70 billion to cover the costs of the war, including the $867 billion US military budget.
In a Wednesday evening post on X, Cassidy thanked Vice President J.D. Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff for their “detailed briefing this afternoon on Iran.”
“I appreciate the White House’s prompt invitation to address many of my concerns,” Cassidy said.
