In parts of the hospital still standing, health workers are doing their best to tend to the injured amid chaotic scenes. Due to a lack of ambulances, people came in private cars, and dozens lay on mats on the floor near the hospital entrance.
An ambulance worker came shouting: “The baby’s coming, the baby, the baby!” And a colleague went ahead with the blanket.
The intensive care unit nurse, who gave her name as Merv, said she was on the night shift when the quake struck before dawn.
“Suddenly, the building started shaking, and it started moving slowly. My friends and I didn’t try to leave the building, we didn’t leave our patients. Then we heard a terrible noise, the building started collapsing.” ” He said.
“The stairs were damaged, we couldn’t leave the building. We didn’t know earlier that most of the building had collapsed. But when we came out of our room, the corridor was in ruins.”
