Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan, the father of Sabikunnahar Soni, who was killed in a shootout between two factions of the Chhatra Dal two decades ago, is fighting cancer. His family, struggling for treatment, is pleading with the government for help.

After retirement, Habibur was diagnosed with cancer in September. His son Maqsudur Rahman Rana said that his health condition deteriorated very quickly.

Habibur, father of three children, used to work in BTCL. His wife Dilara Begum Sonali used to work in the bank. After losing his daughter in the encounter, Habibur started a movement demanding a ‘violence-free campus’. He became the face of the movement.

He is undergoing treatment at Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital in Uttara. “Dad’s got blood cancer [non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma] And the doctors prescribed six doses of chemotherapy,” said Rana.
