Heavy rains have caused floods and landslides in coastal areas of Brazil’s southeast, killing at least 24 people and displacing hundreds of others, according to media reports citing local officials on Sunday.
Rescue workers continue to search for victims, reconnect isolated communities and clear roads, some of which are blocked, trapping countless tourists traveling for Brazil’s Carnival celebrations.
The Sao Paulo state government confirmed 19 deaths and 566 displaced or homeless persons after more than 600 millimeters (23.62 in) of rain lashed the coast of Brazil’s richest state.
Weather forecasts show heavy rain will continue along Sao Paulo’s coast, challenging rescuers and raising the death toll.
