“Winds, rain and waves are expected to pose a significant threat to most areas of Taiwan,” Deputy Director Fong Chin-tzu said, urging the public to remain vigilant.

“It has gained some strength since yesterday,” he said, adding that the storm will move west toward the Taiwan Strait by Monday.

Schools and businesses in the southern and eastern parts of the island were closed Sunday because of the storm, which was packing winds of about 140 kilometers (39 miles) per hour. More than 200 domestic flights were cancelled.
