The third-place team in League A and the runner-up in League B, as well as the third-place team in League B and the runner-up in League C, will play a home-and-away promotion and relegation playoff.
UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin said, “The introduction of the new knockout stage will give teams even more opportunities to progress while keeping the same number of games within the international match calendar.”
In another change, the European qualifiers for the European Championship and World Cup will be more consolidated, with teams drawn into 12 groups of four and five teams.
“The predicament of the European qualifiers has also been addressed and tackled with a brand new format that will give all teams an equal chance to qualify for major tournaments,” Ceferin said.
