The United Nations Security Council is likely to vote Tuesday on Algerian pressure on the 15-member body to demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, diplomats said, after the United States indicated it would veto.
Algeria introduced a preliminary draft resolution more than two weeks ago. But US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield immediately said the text could jeopardize “sensitive talks” aimed at ending the war.
Diplomats said Algeria requested on Saturday that the council vote on Tuesday. To be adopted, a UN Security Council resolution requires at least nine votes in favor and no veto by the United States, Britain, France, China, or Russia.
