The US, the European Union and other countries have imposed sweeping diplomatic and economic sanctions against Russia in response to the attack. The European Council has revoked Russia’s membership and Russia’s veto power in the United Nations Human Rights Council has been suspended. But Russia has dealt with these economic sanctions better than expected. Despite these economic sanctions, the Russian economy shrank by just over 3 percent. The IMF says Russia’s economy will look closer to a 0.3 percent recovery in 2023. US and European sanctions against Russia have failed to yield optimal results.
Historically, it has been observed that Russia has the state capacity to withstand the pressure of sanctions. And therefore it has not been possible to completely isolate Russia from the global economy. While Russia’s trade with the West has waned, its trade with countries in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa continues to grow.
Meanwhile, in its efforts to deal with the war situation, Ukraine’s economy has come to a near standstill. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia’s comprehensive offensive is a challenge to Europe’s collective security. He has termed this war as the war of the whole of Europe. America, Germany and Britain are supplying tanks to Ukraine in this war. However, Zelensky asked NATO not only for tanks, but also for fighters. No clear assurance has been received in this regard so far. Ukrainian officials fear Russia may launch a new offensive to expand its territory in Ukraine. While opposing the move, Ukraine wants to regain lost territory.
Analyzing a year after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, it is worth noting that Russia has adopted several strategies during the war. From the very beginning, it has tried to fully utilize its cyber strategies. Ukraine could not stand in front of these Russian strategies. Russia has managed to effectively assert its influence over the people of the eastern parts of Ukraine. Overall, in addition to conventional warfare, hybrid warfare has been widely used, known in warfare terminology as the Gerasimov Doctrine.
