An Indiana woman has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery for repeatedly stabbing an 18-year-old Indiana University student in the head, an attack the university said was racially motivated.

Police said last week an attack on a public transit bus and the suspect on the bus, 56-year-old Billy Davis, was reported to authorities by a witness. Media have cited court documents saying she was killed because she was Asian.

“This week, Bloomington was reminded that anti-Asian hatred is real,” James Wimbush, the university’s vice president for diversity, said in a statement Friday.
