The United States announced USD 2 billion in additional security aid for Kiev on Friday, the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Pentagon said the aid includes ammunition for the Hymers precision rocket system, 155mm artillery rounds, drone and counter-drone systems, mine-clearing equipment and funding for training and maintenance.
Items in the package – which do not have some of the capabilities Ukraine is seeking, such as Western warplanes and long-range missiles – will be bought from the defense industry rather than from US stocks, which means longer time to get them It will take Kyiv’s forces.
The United States has pushed for international support for Ukraine to return Kiev after Russia’s invasion in February 2022 and coordinated aid from dozens of countries.
