US to end COVID emergency declarations on May 11

“This wind-down would align with the administration’s previous commitments to provide at least 60 days’ notice before terminating PHE,” OMB said in an administration policy statement.

The government is paying for COVID-19 vaccines, some tests and some treatments under the PHE declaration. When it expires, those costs will be shifted to private insurance and government health plans.

The OMB said the end of the PHE would also end the directive, known as Title 42, that deports migrants from Nicaragua, Cuba and Haiti back to Mexico after crossing the US-Mexico border.
