West Indies won over Papua New Guinea in T20 World Cup match

“We fell 10-15 runs short of what could have been a more competitive target, but it was still a good effort after losing so many early wickets,” Valla said on the narrow defeat. “We are happy with the fight we showed in trying to defend that total. It is an opportunity for us and we are looking forward to the challenge of playing our best cricket in the tournament and against teams like these.”

Earlier, Sese Bau made 50 off 43 balls (six fours, a six), making the only meaningful contribution from PNG. They made 136 for eight after being asked to bat. Wicketkeeper Kiplin Doriga (27 not out) and Valla (21) were the others to score more than 20 runs, while pacers Alzari Joseph and Russell led the way for the West Indies with two wickets each.

“Credit to PNG because they played good cricket and their plans were simple, but in the end it was important for us to get the two points,” a relieved Powell said. “However, we need to perform better in all three departments of the game (batting, bowling and fielding). We weren't at the level we expect from ourselves today and we need to improve for the coming matches.”
