No moment defines Argentina-England like Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’.
The teams met at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals. The first half ended goalless.
At the beginning of the second half, Maradona jumped England goalkeeper Peter Shilton and put the ball into the net. Referee Ali bin Nasser ignored England’s furious protests and allowed the goal to stand.
When Maradona celebrated, the England players got angry.
Just four minutes later, he scored one of football’s greatest goals, collecting the ball some 60 yards from goal after dribbling past four England players. It is still considered by many as the ‘goal of the century’.
Argentina won the match 2–1 and won their second World Cup title a week later.
