Police constable Kawsar Ahmed, accused of killing his colleague Monirul Islam (also a police constable), had some mental health problems and was admitted to the Pabna Mental Hospital at least three times during his service, said Kawsar's wife Nilufa Yasmin.
Speaking to this reporter on phone, Nilufa said she could not believe that Kawsar shot and killed his colleague even though he knew he was mentally ill.
Kawsar opened fire on Monirul while he was on duty in the Baridhara diplomatic area of the capital last night.
Monirul, from Darerpara village under Daulatpur Union of Daulatpur Upazila in Kushtia, joined the Bangladesh Police in December 2005. He is the son of Kushtia freedom fighter Hayat Ali. Nilufa said her 80-year-old father-in-law has not yet been informed about the incident.
