The seminar began with opening remarks by Arafat Hossein Khan, Chair, Department of Law, North South University. He remarked that though we see women’s participation in every field, it took 30 years to have a woman judge in the Appellate Division.

He expressed hope to the audience at that time that they would get valuable information about what is happening in the region and how they can prepare for it.

Anita Ghazi Rahman’s speech captivated the audience as she traced the evolution of women’s participation in law locally and globally. Even in 1968, a major United States property law book referred to women as property. At that time the situation in the UK, Canada, Australia and Europe was quite similar.
