MD Shamsuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Begumganj Model Police Station, said the attacks were carried out by targeting the houses of Rakib’s relatives and other agitated residents suspected of being involved in the murder.
He said the police acted quickly, controlled the situation and extinguished the fire with the help of local residents. Additional police and detective branch personnel have since been deployed.
Local residents, on condition of anonymity, said that there was a long-running dispute between two neighboring groups in Khanpur village.
According to him, the argument between the two goldsmiths escalated and Rakib tried to defuse the situation by urging both parties not to create disturbance in the market. One party reportedly became angry at their interference, leading to a fatal attack that night.
