Zelensky to meet Pope as Germany unveils more weapons for Ukraine

Germany’s new package, which will include 30 additional Leopard-1 tanks, Marder armored vehicles, air-defense systems and surveillance drones, is reportedly Berlin’s largest package since Russia’s invasion.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in a statement, “We all hope for an early end to this terrible war by Russia against the people of Ukraine, but unfortunately that is not in sight.”

“That is why Germany will provide all possible assistance as long as it is necessary,” he said.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Zelensky, applauded the announcement, saying it signaled that Russia was “bound to lose and sit on the bench of historical shame.”

Western allies have given Ukraine increasingly powerful weapons, and Britain this week announced it would send Storm Shadow missiles, becoming the first country to send the long-range weapon to Kiev.
