Zia Orphanage Trust case: Khaleda Zia, Tariq Rehman acquitted

After the verdict, Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Joynul Abedin said that the appeal has been accepted. The court has rejected the verdict pronounced by the trial court and the High Court, in which all the culprits have been acquitted.

Earlier, on October 30, 2018, the High Court had increased Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment in the case to 10 years from the trial court’s 5-year prison sentence.

On 14 March 2019, Khaleda Zia filed two separate appeal petitions against the verdict.

The Appellate Division granted Khaleda Zia’s appeal petition on 11 November and stayed the effectiveness of the decision. Subsequently, the former prime minister filed separate appeals against the verdict.

Also, former member of parliament Qazi Salimul Haq Kamal and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed filed separate petitions against the high court order last year which had upheld the 10-year imprisonment.

The hearing on Khaleda Zia’s appeal started on January 7. On the fourth day, on January 14, the hearing ended on the appeal of Khaleda Zia and Sharfuddin Ahmed.
