26 cops to lose job for failing in dope test

DMP (Dhaka Metropolitan Police) has decided to fire 26 of its members for failing in the dope test. Bangladesh police regularly conduct their anti-narcotic drive against drug traffickers and peddlers. But it is repeatedly complained by several anti-narcotic organizations that police is itself corrupted. Many police personnel not only involved in drug trafficking but also many are addicted.

In recent months top police officials have warned their subordinates that they are going to take stern action against corrupted cops and asked them to stop taking drugs. After that warning, many police personnel has stopped taking drugs.

In a recent dope test program, twenty-six police personnel including traffic sergeant, sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, and nayek were found addicted. Most of them are addicted to yaba and marijuana.

The DMP commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said: “I have said at meetings of different units after joining, to tell me if any of them are addicted to drugs so we can arrange for their treatment. Policemen who are involved with drugs or helping drug traders will be arrested and prosecuted.”

Dismissal of police personnel is a lengthy departmental process and after the dismissal affected cops have the opportunity to appeal on Administrative Appellate Tribunal.
