300,000 stage Armistice Day pro-Palestinian rally in London

Nearly 300,000 people marched in the British capital on Saturday as pro-Palestinian supporters renewed calls for a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

Officials feared trouble because the “National March for Palestine” was scheduled for Armistice Day, Britain’s annual commemoration of those killed in the war. Dozens of arrests were made.

The march began after a two-minute silence at The Cenotaph war memorial in central London.

A police spokesman said around 300,000 people were expected to attend.

Protesters waved black, red, white and green Palestinian flags and carried placards declaring “Stop bombing Gaza”.

There have been almost weekly rallies in London since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, in which at least 1,200 people were killed and 239 taken hostage, according to Israel.

The Israeli air and ground military campaign in response has killed more than 11,000 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
Chants of “Free Palestine”, “Ceasefire now” and “Israel is a terrorist state” were heard at the London protest.
