648 MPs under oath: BNP’s Rizvi alleges unconstitutional renewal of power

BNP senior joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the government has buried the law and constitution of the country to renew its tenure in power as the country currently has 648 members of Parliament taking oath.

350 members of the 11th Parliament are still MLAs as the term of that Parliament will end on January 29. Till then they will remain MPs whereas 298 MPs of the 12th Parliament have already taken oath.

Addressing a press conference at the BNP central office in Naya Paltan in the city on Wednesday, Rizvi said, this is a gross violation of the Constitution.

Rizvi said that the members of the 12th Parliament took oath in a hurry on the orders of the Prime Minister while the 11th Parliament has not been dissolved yet, which is unconstitutional.

The process of gazettement of ‘dummy MPs’, their swearing-in, announcement of names of cabinet members and their swearing-in was completed in a hurry within just four days, the BNP leader said.
