BNP leaders allege that activists of anti-government political parties faced gross human rights violations and political persecution during the tenure of former army and police chiefs. Many political activists were forcibly disappeared and many even became disabled due to torture.

The US had imposed sanctions on former IGP Benazir when she was the Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Meanwhile, former army chief Aziz Ahmed was also sanctioned by the US on May 20. Since then, BNP leaders have been criticising these two former top officials.

The BNP top leader on Thursday termed the proposed national budget for this fiscal year presented in Parliament as a “new scheme to loot the country”. He said how can those involved in corruption ensure social security for the people and reduce prices of essential commodities.

Mirza Fakhrul told Prothom Alo, “We are tired of talking about the corruption of this government. This corruption is responsible for the ongoing economic crisis in the country. Whoever takes responsibility for this turns out to be a thief.”
