Border guards beaten by smugglers

It was Friday in the border area of Hatibandha upazila of northern district Lalmonirhat where BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) members were patrolling. They challenged a motorcycle carrying a sack, the man driving the motorcycle fled. Actually that man was carrying about 20 kgs of hemp.

Later about 18 to 20 people led by local Union Parishad member chased the BGB members. They took away that sack and motorcycle. Seven BGB members were beaten by the gang, among them Ropis Chandro Dev was seriously injured and he was rushed to the hospital.

Local Union Parishad chairman complained, that Union Parishad member has been involved with illegal activities for long.

BGB officials have confirmed this incident and they vowed to continued their effort to curb drug trafficking. More troops are deployed there. A case is filed against 22 peoples in the local police station.

BGB is the new name of Bangladeshi paramilitary force, border guards, and the name BDR was abandoned after the bloody mutiny few years ago.
