China’s military dispatched 103 warplanes toward Taiwan in a 24-hour period, the island’s defense ministry said Monday, a daily record in recent days.
The ministry said the planes were detected between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday. As is customary, they turned back before reaching Taiwan.
China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has conducted increasingly large military exercises in the air and waters around Taiwan as tensions between the two and the United States have escalated. The US is Taiwan’s main arms supplier and opposes any attempts to change Taiwan’s status by force.
