CUET protest: Transport owners, workers and BRTA need to wake up

0 minutes, 54 seconds Read

Professor Hadiuzzaman, former director of the Accident Research Institute of Bangladesh University of Science and Technology (BUET), told Prothom Alo that working age people and students have more movement on the roads and hence they are becoming more victims of road mismanagement .

Notably, after the student protests demanding road safety in 2018 that shook the entire country, the government passed the Road Transport Act, which was appreciated by all. But this Act could not be implemented due to objections from transport owners and employees. As a result, the number of deaths due to road traffic and accidents has increased even more.

The Road Safety Foundation has said that the monetary value of human resources lost in accidents this Eid is Tk 13.3 billion (Tk 1,330 crore). We know that the loss of human life cannot be compensated with money.

Nevertheless, we strongly support the demand of CUET students to pay 20 million taka (2 crore taka) compensation to the families of both the deceased students. The court and concerned authorities have already ordered to pay compensation to the transport owners. But in many cases it has been neglected.
