Jagannath University started its journey as a school before the establishment of Dhaka University. It was offering post graduate course even before establishing Dhaka University. Jagannath University was established by transforming Jagannath College to a university. According to Jagannath University law this new university will get all the properties of old Jagannath College.
Ten of the dormitories of Jagannath College are grabbed by some influential people; a portion of land is allotted to Bangladesh Bank for its Sadarghat Branch. Students of the newly formed university have been demanding eviction from dormitories and shifting of Bangladesh Bank branch since the establishment. But the authority has failed to respond to the demand.
One of the occupied dormitories Tibet Hall is grabbed by a political leader who is an anti government leader now. Student wing of the ruling party started agitation program demanding the eviction from that dormitory. General students have joined the demonstration and they are now pressing for complete eviction from all the occupied halls. After repeated assurance from the authority the students have seen no implementation so far.
Education minister has visited the university today and assured that he has discussed the matter with the prime minister and he is hopeful that students demand will be fulfilled soon.
