Lawyer Manzil Morshed told Prothom Alo that according to media reports Dhaka is on the list of most polluted in the world. The writ was filed due to the inaction of the authorities despite the court issuing 9-point directions to prevent air pollution.
The HRPB’s plea sought directions to take effective steps within 24 hours to implement the order passed by the High Court on January 13, 2020 to prevent air pollution. Following a writ petition filed by HRPB on 13 January 2020, the High Court issued 9 point directions to curb air pollution. These include covering the goods in trucks and other vehicles carrying soil, sand, garbage in Dhaka city, covering soil, sand, cement, stone and construction material in the construction area, sprinkling water on the roads, ensuring compliance with tender conditions. Karna Municipal Corporation is included. Roads, culverts, carpets, earthworks, to limit the movement of vehicles and to stop the movement of finished vehicles as per the Road Transport Act; Shutting down tire factories running without environmental certification, bagging daily waste from markets or shops and ensuring proper disposal.
