Dhaka welcomes Bhutanese King on state visit: Independence Day celebrations and bilateral agreements awaited

On Thursday, the king will visit Kurigram Special Economic Zone.

He will leave Bangladesh territory for Golakganj in Assam via Sonahat Land Port on Thursday afternoon.

Minister of State for Shipping Khalid Mahmood Choudhary will see him off there.

Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth King of Bhutan, recently sent a congratulatory letter to the Prime Minister, saying that under his dynamic and strong leadership, Bangladesh has enjoyed peace, stability and unprecedented economic growth.

He also described Bhutan as a “close friend” and celebrated with the people of Bangladesh on the occasion.

Bhutan was the first country to recognize newly independent Bangladesh on 6 December 1971 when the third King of Bhutan sent a message of recognition by telegram.

Since then Bangladesh and Bhutan share a special multidimensional bilateral relationship. Soon after independence, the Bhutanese government took the initiative to establish diplomatic relations with Bangladesh and as a result, formal diplomatic relations were established on 12 April 1973.
