Mustafa K Mujeri, former chief economist of Bangladesh Bank, stressed the need for political will in economic recovery. “There are questions about the 2014 and 2018 elections. We hope the next election will be credible and fair and will promote economic reforms.”

Policy Research Institute (PRI) executive director Ahsan H Mansoor said that several months before the elections, it is very difficult to implement large-scale fundamental reforms in the economic sector. Therefore, the government should take short-term initiatives for the next three months before the elections.

He also said that the next government, regardless of which party it leads, will not be able to complete its term unless reforms are initiated immediately after the elections. In the current situation the economy cannot survive for the next five years.

“No political government can survive if the economy is not on track, as we have seen in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and many other countries,” he said.
