Largest independent scientific study concludes there is no evidence that Facebook harms wellbeing

They contrast with previous studies, including two separate academic analyzes from last year that found Facebook had a negative impact on the mental health of American college students, as well as litigation in the United States.

In 2021, former Facebook engineer Francis Haugen leaked more than 20,000 pages of internal documents suggesting the company put profits before security, prompting renewed US pressure for regulation.

Since then nearly 200 US school districts have joined a lawsuit against the big tech companies for allegedly causing mental damage, depression and anxiety among students.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has denied the claims, with founder Mark Zuckerberg alleging “a coordinated effort to selectively use leaked documents to paint a false picture”.
