OC suspended for being mute witness to lynching

After suspension of three policemen, the Companyganj police chief has also been temporarily suspended for standing by and watching a mob beat a young man to death.

The district police super (SP) Harunur Rashid Hazari said on Monday that OC Md. Rafique Ullah has been suspended for negligence of duty. Hazari told bdnews24.com that the Chittagong police DIG Md. Nowsher Ali gave the suspension order in the morning. Rafique Ullah has been sent back to the police line.

A three-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident and submit its report within three days. Earlier on Sunday, Companyganj police sub-inspector Mohammad Akram Sheikh, constables Abdur Rahim and Hema Ranjan Chakma were suspended as they acted as mere spectators while a mob beat a young man, Milon, to death.
On July 27, six people, branded by police as robbers, were beaten to death by an angry mob at Rahimar Tek area at Charkakrha union of the upazila. One of them was Shamsuddin Milon.
The local TV channel, Somoy, in a video footage, showed the mob beating Milon in the presence of police. The footage also later showed that later the police loading an apparently dead Milon into a waiting police van. The footage shot on a mobile phone showed the people hitting Milon with sticks and kicking him on the head after dragging him down from a police van.
Citing Milon’s death as premeditated murder, his mother Kohinur Begum filed a case on Aug 3 against Companiganj police officials, local UP member Jamal Uddin and Mizanur Rahman, the husband of a female UP
member.
