As they remained in third place with 39 points, same as Man City who have better goal difference. Arsenal have 47 points with one game less. Man City will face fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.
To add to United’s frustration they would go to Arsenal without influential midfielder Casemiro, as he received a late yellow card for a foul that triggered the suspension.
“We are not happy with the draw. We should have taken our chances and closed out the game,” Fernandes said. “He scored a great goal at the end. Now we can’t do anything.
“We have to look ahead now. There are other games coming up. We are still doing good things. We are really disappointed with the result but the next one is close.”
The loan signing of giant Dutch striker Weghorst from Burnley was a surprise to many, but he almost justified his starting spot with a header over the crossbar as United looked the more dangerous side.
Palace were unable to make much of an impact in the first half, although they did come close to scoring when Odsonne Edouard’s curled effort was touched over the crossbar by De Gea.
Palace’s defense closed down shortly afterwards, allowing Eriksen to follow in on Marcus Rashford’s pass and the Dane’s cut-back was perfect for Fernandes who made no mistake.
United were in control after the break and looked set to become the first United team since the days of former manager Alex Ferguson to win 10 games in a row.
But they invited some late pressure and mid-table Palace took advantage to avoid a third defeat in a row.
Palace manager Patrick Vieira said, “In the last 15 minutes we put them under pressure. Michael scored that free kick.”
