Rana Plaza incident: Court grants bail to main accused Rana

The High Court (HC) on Thursday granted bail to Sohail Rana, the owner of Rana Plaza that collapsed in 2013 in a murder case over the deadly incident in Savar, in which 1,138 RMG workers were killed, UNB reported.

The High Court division bench of Justice Mohammad Akram Hussain Chowdhary and Justice Shahid Noor passed the order after hearing the bail plea.

Advocate Kamrul Islam, one of the defense lawyers, said that after the order, there is no legal impediment for accused Rana to walk out of jail.

Earlier on March 1 last year, the High Court had issued a rule asking the concerned authorities why they would not be granted bail in the matter.

On April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, an illegally constructed building in Savar that housed five garment factories, came crashing down, killing 1,138 people and injuring over 2,000 others.
