Workers have gone on strike demanding almost triple their wages, which has seen violent incidents in recent days, despite employers offering 25 percent.
The minimum wage is set by a state-appointed board that includes representatives of manufacturers, unions, and wage experts.
“The new minimum monthly wage for textile factory workers has been set at Taka 12,500 ($113),” board secretary Raisha Afroz told AFP.
This figure was immediately rejected by the unions, who were demanding a minimum of Tk 23,000.
Unions say their members have been badly hit by persistent inflation, which reached nearly 10 percent in October, and a rising cost of living due to a nearly 30 percent decline in the taka against the US dollar since the beginning of last year. Partially a crisis has arisen.
