Regional governor Pavlo Kirilenko said in a statement that Russian missiles twice struck the center of Ukraine’s Pokrovsk on Monday night, killing eight people, including five civilians.

The governor said a second missile hit the Ukraine-controlled town near the front line 40 minutes after the first. Witnesses to the attack told a Reuters cameraman at the scene that it killed and wounded first responders.

The dead include two rescue workers and an army personnel. Ukrainian officials said nine policemen and one military were injured, but most of the 31 injured were civilians, including a member of the local city council.
