Sufia Kamal’s death anniversary observed in great manner

Speakers at a memorial meting today observed that Poet Begum Sufia Kamal would remain ever glittering in the history as the identify and existence of the Bengali nation.

“Throughout her long colourful life, she never made any compromise with her social commitment for emancipation of the women community and her political philosophy of non- communalism,” they told the meeting, organized by Jatiya Ganotantrik League, at Mukti Bhaban marking the 11th death anniversary of Poet Sufia Kamal.

Noted lawyer Barrister Amir-ul Islam attended the meeting as the chief guest while Dhaka Mohanagar Awami League Publication and Publicity Secretary Abdul Haq Sabuj, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Editor Azizul Islam Bhuiyan and Awami Olama League President Maulana Ilias-bin-Helali were the special guests.

Presided over by Gonotantrik League President M A Jail, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Krishak League leader Advocate Khandakar Shamsul Haq Reza , Awami League leader ASM Mostafa Kamal, Muktijoddha Projanma League leaders Abdul Hasis and Ahmed Saifur Rahman, journalist Manik Lal Ghose, student leaders Talukdar Nasiruddin Jewell and Shamsul Islam Sujan and Bangabandhu Chhatra Parishad President Khandker Tareque Raihan.

Recalling the courageous role played by Begum Sufia Kamal in various critical junctures of the nation, Barrister Amir-ul-Islam said she was the forerunner of all democratic movements that later culminated into the 1971 War of Liberation.

In 1964, when Pakistani military ruler Ayub Kahn came to Bangladesh, he said, a five-member delegation headed by Poet Sufia Kamal called on him and pressed for giving democracy. An angry Ayub said, “For whom I shall introduce democracy? None is insan (human being) here — all are hyenas.”

“But, you’re the leader of those hyenas,” Sufia Kamal told in
the face of General Ayub that was at that moment a strong slap on
the Pakistani military dictator.

Barrister Amir referring to the brave and courageous role of
Sufia Kamal said that many important communications and actions
were done during the crucial junctures of Liberation War from the
Dhanmondi “Sajermaya” residence of Poet Sufia Kamal.

Making her own life risky, Sufia Kamal took many bold steps
to expedite the independence of the country.

Abdul Haq said Sufia Kamal had great regards for Father of
the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Equally, she used
to love Sheikh Hasina as her own daughter. During crucial moment
of her life during war time when she was expecting baby, Sheikh
Hasina was under her warm affection and care, he added.

Azizul Islam Bhuiyan said at the eventful launching ceremony
of Ganoforum by Dr Kamal Hossain on the Engineers Institution
premises, Sufia Kamal while speaking as the guest of honour said,
“What you do, do it keeping Sheikh Hasina with you as she has
lost her parents.”
