Concerns are increasing due to the confrontational stance of the government and opposition parties regarding the electoral system. The chances of finding a solution to the problem through talks are decreasing.
The stubborn stance of both the parties is pushing the country towards conflict and instability. The path to dialogue and solution is open. Both sides should give priority to national interests and come to the negotiating table as soon as possible.
The comments were made by speakers at a meeting titled “Consensus or Violence: Which Direction Are We Headed” on Sunday. The meeting was organized virtually by Shushashoner Jono Nagorik (Shujan).
Shujan’s secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar stressed that as per constitutional obligations, the 12th national elections are scheduled to be held between November 1 and January 29. Everyone wants these elections to be fair, impartial and competitive. However, the current political scenario does not favor competitive elections.
He said, “There is no consensus among political parties regarding the role of the government during the elections and its possible consequences for the country will be very serious. “Rising tension over the elections could escalate into serious violence.”
