It is also a matter to think about the improvement in the standard of living of the common people whose sweat and hard work is behind these successes.
The fact is that even after 52 years of independence, we have not been able to ensure basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, education and health to the common people including laborers and farmers.
The aim of independence was to establish Bangladesh as a truly democratic state, even after five decades we are far from that. Despite the constitution naming the people as the ultimate source of power in the republic, democracy could not be institutionalized.
So on this day of independence, we need to ask ourselves – will we be satisfied with uneven economic progress? Will we accept or strengthen the fragile state of democratic institutions?
