Tragic incident: A boat full of 260 migrants sank off the coast of Yemen, 39 died

Each year thousands of migrants from the Horn of Africa cross the Red Sea to reach the oil-rich Gulf, fleeing conflict, natural disasters or poor economic prospects.

In April, two boats sank off the coast of Djibouti two weeks apart, killing dozens of people.

The IOM said at the time that it had documented a total of 1,350 deaths on the migration route since 2014, not including this year’s deaths.

In 2023 alone, it said at least 698 deaths were recorded on the route, including 105 at sea.
