Asked about the report on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the claims demonstrated the importance of maintaining dialogue with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog.

However, Peskov said there are no plans for a meeting between IAEA chief Rafael Grossi and President Vladimir Putin at the moment.

Several of Ukraine’s nuclear power stations have been the center of attention since the start of the conflict. Russian forces seized the defunct Chernobyl nuclear power plant less than 48 hours after the troops invaded, and also captured the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant – the largest in Europe – at the start of the war.

Kyiv and Moscow have both accused each other of shelling Zaporizhia, and Ukraine says Russia is using the site as a de facto weapons depot.
